|For information on submitting an obituary, please contact Peoria Journal Star by phone at 309-686-3115.
Funeral directors who have an account may submit obituaries to our website, www.journalstarobits.com, between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. for publication the following day. (We recommend funeral directors cut and paste text for an obit from a Word program to our Web site to minimize time online.) For those out-of-area funeral homes without an account, please call the obituary desk at the number above to obtain a member name and password.
Death notices ("Services Pending") must arrive by 5:30 p.m., though they also can be accepted by telephone or fax. Funeral directors should follow up with a phone call to our obituary desk.
We accept obituaries only from funeral homes, private funeral directors, cremation societies or other comparable entities in charge of funeral arrangements or body disposal. None will be accepted directly from family members, unless a unique circumstance exists whereby usual professionals were not used. In such cases, we must confirm the death through an independent and reputable source, such as a coroner, police or a minister. A family member also must provide his or her phone number. A City Editor must grant approval.
Faxed, hand-written or phoned-in obituaries will NOT be accepted, except in most extreme circumstances, such as our obituary Web site being down.
In extreme circumstances, we will receive obits via e-mail, fax or telephone. (See Out-of-Town Obits entry.) Photos should be submitted through the Web site as attachments to obituaries by 5 p.m. daily for next-day publication. (See Photographsentry.)
We can attempt to publish late death notices when time and page flow allows it. The City Desk editor, in consultation with the Copy Desk, must approve. We can attempt to accommodate, but cannot guarantee, minor changes to obituaries after they have been submitted. (For example, adding a pastor) Time and page flow will be considered. Always consult with Copy Desk.
We will publish a free "death notice," rather than an obituary, when complete funeral services have not been arranged. They will include only the deceased's name, age and address, as well as the funeral home and its city.Death notices will be accepted either through our obituary Web site, over the telephone or by fax. (See Submitting Obits/Deadlines entry.)
The Journal Star will publish for free an abbreviated obituary for anyone living in or formerly from our circulation area. It will be two paragraphs. The first paragraph will include a dateline of the town where the person lived, assuming it is in our circulation area. If not, the dateline must be of the town linking the deceased to our area. Also included will be the name, age, address, time, day and full date of death, and place of death. The second paragraph will include the time, day and place of services, visitation and burial or cremation. The name of the funeral home will be added if neither the services nor visitation is held there.
